Words and Music: Jerry Herman (1964)

Hello, Dolly,
Well, hello, Dolly,
It’s so nice to have you back
Where you belong.
You’re looking swell, Dolly,
We can tell, Dolly,
You’re still glowing,
You’re still crowing,
You’re still going strong.

We feel the room swaying,
For the band’s playing
One of your old fav’rite songs
From `way back when.
So, golly gee, fellas,
Find her a vacant knee, fellas,
Dolly’ll never go away,
Dolly’ll never go away,
Dolly’ll never go away again.

“Hello, Dolly!” is the title song of the popular 1964 musical of the same name. Louis Armstrong’s version reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, ending The Beatles’ streak of three number-one hits in a row (they also held the top three spots) and becoming the biggest hit of Armstrong’s career.

Here is an Original Broadway Cast performance from 1965, featuring Carol Channing as Dolly:

Here is a sizzling version by Sinatra and the Count Basie Orchestra. He even changes the song to “Hello Louis” the second time through:
