Lyrics: Sammy Cahn; Music: Jule Styne (1946)

Lyrics

Give me five minutes more,
Only five minutes more:
Let me stay,
Let me stay
In your arms.

Here am I begging for
Only five minutes more,
Only five minutes more
Of your charms.

All week long
I dreamed about
Our Saturday date –
Don’t you know
That Sunday morning
You can sleep late?

Give me five minutes more,
Only five minutes more,
Let me stay,
Let me stay
In your arms.

Background

“Five Minutes More” is a number one hit pop song originally recorded by the Ross Sisters (who, as well as singing and dancing, did acrobatics and contortionism). The song is often referred to as “Give Me Five Minutes More.”

Performances

Here’s Frank Sinatra performing the song from 1946, the year the song came out (the accompaniment is by the orchestra of Axel Stordahl). This was one of the hit recordings from the year.  Note that this recording starts with the verse (beginning “Dear, this evening seemed to go so awfully fast…”) – we don’t usually do that bit, but of course you can learn to sing it if you want!
